My name is Annalee Grant, I’m a Canadian photojournalist discovering a new life in Charlottesville, Virginia. I am orginally from Red Lake, Ontario, but grew up in Kimberley, B.C.
I graduated from SAIT in 2009, and since then have worked in the Yukon, Jasper and Kimberley/Cranbrook, B.C. I developed a passion for photography after graduating and beginning work as a sports editor.
While photography is my absolute passion, reporting is my bread and butter. I have been a general reporter, court reporter, sports editor, photojournalist, columnist, you name it. My experience is with community news coverage, plus federal and provincial politics, and more.
My greatest challenge was covering the 2010 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, when I was working for the Whitehorse Star. I had to shoot and report on the race as it happened, wherever it happened. That meant stories and photos had to be filed from Circle, Alaska in a darkened school gym, or in the bustling Info Centre in Dawson, Yukon, or in Eagle, Alaska’s makeshift media centre in the town’s tiny, log cabin-style library. I met my boyfriend, Josh there and it is still, to this day, the coolest assignment I’ve ever done. I even climbed a mountain for a one-in-a-million shot, and I have never lost my drive to get the story no matter what challenges are in the way.
Outside of photography, I have a wonderful boyfriend named Josh. My mom is the editor of the Kimberley Daily Bulletin, the smallest daily newspaper in Canada. My dad is a miner and my biggest fan. My sister is an intern on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and continues to inspire me to be better, because she can do almost anything regardless of how little time she has. My brother is a heavy duty mechanic who lives in Whitehorse, Yukon.
I have a horse named Blackberry, who I miss terribly since I moved to Virginia. It’s my dream to get him here one day soon and start riding again. To fill the gap, I volunteer with Eagle Hill Equine Rescue in Frederiksberg, Va. I love gardening, and started doing that again a few years ago with a small plot in the community garden in Jasper, Alta. Last year, my Dad and I built a greenhouse, which produced an enormous and unmanageable amount of tomatoes, but it was a lot of fun. I love punk, indie, pop and Canadian music. My favourites these days are Taking Back Sunday, Against Me!, Said the Whale, Sweet Thing, Astronautalis, Dragonette, City and Colour and of course, Britney and Lady Gaga.
I hope you enjoy my work, and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments.
